LIFE SKETCH OF RABINDRANATH TAGORE
——————————————————–
INDIA is a land of saints, sages and poets. Rabindranath Tagore combined the qualities of all the three in him. He was a great poet of India, rather of the whole world. The east and the West both pay homage to him. The great Bengali poet was born on the 25th of Bengali Baishakh (May 6 ) in 1861.
He was the youngest son ol Maharshi Debendranath Tagore, an eminent leader of the Brahmo Samaj. He did not receive any regular education. For sometime he was taught in a convent school in calcutta and then privately at home.

He showed a great aptitude for poetry at an early age.He started composing poems when he was a boy.Even at University college London where he received higher education he chose to express his thoughts and feelings mainly through poetry. He
Wrote and sang songs and directed lyrics dramas. His early poems was published in the form of a collection named morning songs,.He wrote short stories, novels, dramas, letters but it is a lyric poet that he is remembered most.
In 1912 he transferred in English a collection of songs know as Gitanjali. Meaning thereby a dedication of poets song to God.The title is quite significant for in it we get a glimpse of his infnite God and his faith in his ways.
Tagore poetry has certain marked characteristics. It is mainly religious. It emboodies his views on God and soul which according to him are the name of the same being.Another quantity of his poetry is that it is always replete with Indian atmosphere. His poetry breath s a spirit of optimism.but what appears to us most is humanism.
He was awarded the Nobel prize for literature in 1913.
We are proud of him for giving us our National anthem, Jana Gana Mana .
